True Courage and Fearlessness

When speaking of Bushido, the three qualities considered essential are Loyalty, Integrity, and Courage. When these three virtues are perfectly combined in one man, he is called a samurai of the highest quality.
– Daidōji Yūzan

He is a warrior who has courage.
A bushi is a noble warrior, a knight.
Do means the Way.
Bushido is the Way of a noble Warrior.
Bushido is comprehension of Truth, of Riddles of the Universe, the harmonious unity of Heaven, Earth and Man through mental and physical warrior practices.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

True courage is in living when it is justifiable to live and dying when it is justifiable to die.
– Daidôji Yûzan

A samurai is a Warrior. But he is not a murderer, since he does not do anything against the voice of his consciousness.
Along with this he is fearless, for people with firm convictions are always courageous.
Understanding the Truth is the source of their unflinching courage.
It is the supreme courage.
A. R. Basov, "Legend"

Wisdom, compassion, and courage are the three universally recognized moral qualities of men.
– Confucius

Willpower, unflappable courage, and determination together with strength and polished skills will always help you when you face any danger.
You will be the master of any situation.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Courage is doing what is right… Tranquility is courage in repose. A truly brave man is ever serene; he is never taken by surprise; nothing ruffles the equanimity of his spirit.
– Inazō Nitobe

A person grows when he faces challenges, but withers in uncertainty and faint-heartedness.
Deliberately choosing risk, the Warrior enters a new dimension of life, no longer wallowing in sorrow and boredom that ordinary people experience. The Warrior becomes cheerful and energetic, he is the master of his own life and himself…
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The Way to find courage is to seek it on the field of conflict. And the sure way to victory is willingness to risk one's own life.
– Ōyama Masutatsu

The real man is he who remains resolved, but is capable of putting a bridle on his impulses. One should tread carefully and not rely solely on bravery. A Warrior shall be resolute but not reckless.
A Samurai shall not be afraid of anything (fear kills reason), neither shall he take wild risks, because undue risk could impede his ability to perform his duty, which is inexcusable.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

A man with outward courage dares to die; a man with inner courage dares to live.
– Lao Tzu, "Tao Te Ching"

The higher the risk and the closer death is, the bigger is the thrill a man has. In rummaging through one's personal experiences, anyone can recall the moments of utter bliss in their lives – an astounding invigorative pureness that results from taking risk.
But risk-taking is not just an enjoyment and purification. Following the Way of Risk, the Warrior realizes more and more that without challenging his life, his Way, and his being, without risking he cannot comprehend the Truth.
Risk becomes a method of perceiving the Reality. Risk becomes a criterion of Faith. Faith does not exist without associated risk. The more you risk, the stronger your Faith is. Risk is a battle with death, closeness to death. The Spirit of the Warrior endeavors to fight this battle, and death becomes an invaluable mentor of the Warrior.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Greatness as a leader is measured in part by your willingness to accept daunting challenges. Achieving tough goals requires practicing the secret of commitment: Risk all to win all.
– Toyotomi Hideyoshi

A soldier must have courage to rush to the charge or fight up to the last ditch on the defensive. Courage may be accompanied by hesitation, though. This is why an officer needs unfailing courage – a valorous spirit. It is a conscious inherent trait cultivated in a warrior during his entire life.
A military commander needs fortitude, i.e. the most cold-blooded audacity, true grit, and zero hesitation. Fortitude enables him to make a decision and turn it into action despite any circumstances.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

When true courage is revealed, the fate of a warrior is fulfilled completely, and all words die down on one's lips.
– Daidoji Yuzan

The Warrior feels the appeal of risk and intuitively starts to understand that the Spirit calls him to death.
The Spirit calls to death!
Death becomes desirable, because the Way of Risk leads to it, because death is the Gate…
A paradoxical and sublime yearning for death grows in the soul of the Warrior. All samurai refer to this fact. Few people understand the source of this hidden irrational yearning. It is the secret love described by Yamamoto Tsunetomo in "Hidden by the Leaves"…
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Courage is gritting one's teeth; it is simply doing that and pushing ahead, paying no attention to the circumstances.
– Yamamoto Tsunetomo

A person grows when he faces challenges, but withers in uncertainty and faint-heartedness.
Deliberately choosing risk, the Warrior enters a new dimension of life, no longer wallowing in sorrow and boredom that ordinary people experience. The Warrior becomes cheerful and energetic, he is the master of his own life and himself…
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

There is nothing unique about contemplating an attack or standing firmly shoulder to shoulder on a battlefield with others. Advancing alone when all others find it impossible, holding one’s position when nobody has the strength to fight – this is what distinguishes a courageous warrior who has surpassed others.
– Daidôji Yûzan

By becoming fearless, the Warrior crosses the Rubicon of life and death, acquiring the fullness of existence unavailable before.
Without fearlessness, integrity of life is inaccessible.
This idea seems incredible, but it is really so… The objective is to conceive the essence of the fundamental concept of fearlessness, an absolute fearlessness of existence…
The higher the risk and the closer death is, the more potent is the thrill a man has. Rummaging in personal experience anyone would recall the moments of utter bliss, an astounding invigorative pureness that taking risk offers.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

If a man does not have enough courage and determination to fight until the end, he will give up in the time of need.
– Sōhō Takuan

A raging battle against hopelessness is fought in the Warrior’s heart. But if the Warrior wins it, he starts practicing the philosophy of Faith and risk. This philosophy states that any choice requires resolution and implies risk. Any uncertainty may be overcome only with determination. Risk forms the basis of life; it is vital for life and averts us from a primitive existence.
A person grows when he faces challenges, but withers in uncertainty and faintheartedness.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Humiliating those who are weaker than you is an unworthy conduct for a brave samurai. Those who like doing what a courageous person abhors and avoids are absolutely fairly called cowards.
– Daidoji Yuzan

A warrior must learn to beware of what is really dangerous, to display adequate prudence, but his heart must be devoid of fear.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Whatever you do should be done for the sake of your Master, Parents, the people in general, and for posterity. This is Great Compassion. The wisdom and courage that come from compassion are real wisdom and courage. When one punishes or strives with the heart of compassion, what he does will be limitless in strength and correctness. Doing something only for one's own sake is shallow and mean and turn into evil. I understood the matters of wisdom and courage some time ago. I am just now beginning to understand the matter of compassion.
– Yamamoto Tsunetomo
