The True Way

A hero should go his own way!

The whole power of the Universe is concentrated in a human being, but he has to find the way to it.
It is the quest which is called the Way.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Easy is right. Begin right, and you will be easy. Continue easy and you are right... The right way to go easy is to forget the right way, and forget that the going is easy.
– Chuang Tzu

Good and evil are fairly subjective notions. A wise man rejects evil but is also indifferent to good. He stands above them understanding their relativity; he has comprehended the holistic nature of all things, he has obtained equilibrium and peace, and nothing is able to stagger him. A wise man realizes his mission and follows his own Way.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

There are various Ways. There is the Way of salvation by the law of Buddha, the Way of Confucius governing the Way of learning, the Way of healing as a doctor, as a poet teaching the Way of Waka, tea, archery, and many arts and skills. Each man practices as he feels inclined.
It is said the warrior's is the twofold Way of brush and sword, and he should have a taste for both Ways.
– Miyamoto Musashi

Understand various Ways but follow your own... On the whole, sharing the Buddhist ideals of compassion, the samurai did not accept the Buddhist canon of nonresistance to evil by force. A warrior must be humble in heart but not soft; patient but not lenient. A warrior's mercy is in his stamina. It is the stamina of the person with strong moral principles, adamant spirit, and bravery.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The way is One and only One. The way is close at hand, but men seek it afar. It is in easy things, but men seek for it in difficult things.
– Mencius

Bushi-Do is a Way different from all other Ways. All Ways contain the fundamental idea of self-perfection and reaching Enlightenment. Bushi-Do contains this idea, too, but utilizes a notably different methodology to accomplish this great task. Bushi-Do advocates will.
Active and unbending will becomes a super method and a special type of philosophy.
Will is the issue over which the orthodox followers of Bushi-Do opposed classic Buddhism, considering it to be a foreign and harmful religion and a doctrine that nurtured cowardice and lack of will.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The difference between the Way of the Samurai and all other Ways is that if you stray from the Way even a little, you will become confused and fall into bad ways.

The truth rests inside. The heart always feels the truth intuitively; you only need to carefully listen to it.
If you have reached understanding – act without delay!
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Being a man means constantly venturing to produce proof of bravery to yourself. Being a man means always being in the front and following the path to the peak of bravery to die there in the snows of that peak.

If a man can say to himself, “Today I've had an adventure, and this made my day!” – he lives the right way. He feels elated. A man, like an ocean, needs vast expanse and fresh wind to live.

If you direct your efforts in a wrong way, you are doomed to collapse. It is evident, but it must get through your head. Only concentrated efforts are effective. Scattering your thoughts means inevitable defeat.
Any level could be achieved only when you are nearing it. It is essential to approach a target step by step, to get to the point from whence you can hit it. A tremendous distance may be covered by small steps. A chain of tiny alterations results in great changes. Narrow margins turn into wide margins. It is important to take your time and act in a systematic way.

– Daidōji Yūzan

A warrior must learn to watch his Way from the sidelines, to be detached, impartial towards himself and his own deeds. Only in this manner does he save himself from making a mistake, as even a slight deviation from the Way is sure to escalate drastically in a very short time.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The Way of the Warrior has been misunderstood. It is not a means to kill and destroy others. Those who seek to compete and better one another are making a terrible mistake. To smash, injure, or destroy is the worst thing a human being can do. The real Way of a Warrior is to prevent such slaughter — it is the Art of Peace, the power of love.
– Ueshiba Morihei

But there is one transcending level, and this is the most excellent of all. At his level the person is aware of the endlessness of entering deeply into a certain Way and never thinks of himself as having finished. He truly knows his own insufficiencies and never in his whole life thinks that he has succeeded. He has no thoughts of pride but with self-abasement knows the Way to the end.
– Yamamoto Tsunetomo

Those are wise, who, while in a state of calm, can perceive the path of situations. Such people can see beforehand where the flow of life is directed, and act in accordance with their foresight.
The Warrior who comprehends the Way should always keep this saying in mind, never forget it, and try to make it a guideline to follow. Then he will gradually acquire such situational sensitivity to be able to cope with any challenge.
