Warrior's Religion

We must be strong.
Whatever evil may invade the world
We must be able
To oust it and protect justice.
– Ueshiba Morihei

If a nation is alive, it means it has warriors. To wipe out a nation you have to eliminate its military spirit, deprive it of force. The world survives because of real men, because of force circulation. As soon as a country is disabled, when men cease to be men, the "ravens" come flying, blood-thirsty "hyenas" come running and other beasts in human shape come into sight. They tear to pieces and devour everything on which they can lay their hands. The world turns into chaos and a gory nightmare.
Who can stand against them? Who can protect? Real men, warriors – and no one else.
Warriors are the only support of a nation – guarantors of security and life. Warriors should be the elite of the nation – bearers of advanced ideas – otherwise a nation is doomed.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The laws of Heavens are merciless; you can neither escape, nor hide from them.
– Luo Guanzhong, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms"

Weakness generates failure and decay. In nature, lice attack a weakened and distressed creature; they propagate on it and live by sucking out its vital force.
Only he who becomes strong can shake off all parasites; nobody can take advantage of him.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Knowledge and action should not be separated.
Wang Yangming

Strength gives freedom. Strength gives dignity. The strong are people of integrity. This idea is forever true for both individuals and nations. You must not be a victim, you must not be weak.
Reject it!
Be a Warrior.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The Way of the Warrior is based on deliverance from the fear of death.
– Yagyū Munenori

If you grow stronger with each day, then you live the right way. Consciously empty your mind of everything that brings about weakness. Everyone can figure what enfeebles them, but few have enough willpower to squeeze out the weakness and reprogram their minds.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Even if the whole world explodes and everything falls into pieces, you must believe.
– Søren Kierkegaard

Cultivate no-limit psychology. The overcoming of one's standard self is the hardest task, but it is the overcoming that is the key to everything.
It is not easy to strike thousands of blows, withstand everything and win dozens of fights at a stretch. This seems impossible. But those who have overcome the limit arrive at a new level of capabilities and acquire a new state of mind…
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

One must possess a mind that frees the mind.
– Zhongfeng Mingben

The key to everything.
Cultivation of fundamental faith is the most difficult task, but is the essential thing for a Warrior.
One must be worthy of victory, and those are worthy who do not harbor any uncertainty. You must have faith in victory! The slightest doubt may ruin everything. You always come amiss, if you do not have faith.
A man must believe that his will and fortitude are above anything else: spirit and concentration may do anything with amorphous matter.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

He who is capable of summoning his energy in one instant obtains force. He who is able to concentrate all his force into one blow has a gift from gods.
– V. N. Morshankin

Every warrior knows that an encounter with real danger is the most effective method to build up strength. The stronger the adversary, the higher the danger, the greater the development. This is a risky but attractive method.
In the long run, the ability to make oneself overcome extreme stress or defeat the adversary is mostly about mastering one’s state of mind – victory over oneself.
In any case, the only adversary is yourself, even if there is a real enemy.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

A real warrior must always be ready to meet his death. He must always be prepared to lose his life without hesitation at any moment.
Fear blinds the mind and paralyzes willpower. A warrior needs deliberate and calm determination, a mind free of illusions, and will harder than metal.
Do not mind pain; meet your death as if you do it every day, samurai!
This is the true Way of the Warrior.
– Daidōji Yūzan

A warrior comes to know certain secrets in a threshold state when death is distinctively near. When a warrior stands for a long time under an icy waterfall, he is pierced through by the cold that brings pain and numbness… His body revolts, because it is dying or maybe it only seems that way to the shell. If you flirt with death, maintaining a delicate balance is not easy.
On the other hand, if you free your consciousness from the dictate of the body with the help of willpower and enter into meditation, a shift in consciousness and a breakthrough in capabilities will ensue.
The warrior then feels that his body does not govern his spirit anymore. The spirit begins to realize its independence from the body and then its power over the matter. It is the secret of martial arts comprehension!
The paradoxical conclusion is that a human being is not what he imagines!
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

I think that the Way of the Warrior for a samurai is all about transcending the human.
– Miyamoto Musashi

Will and mind are immaterial, they are intangible, but they provide everything. You must realize this.
The source of genuine strength for a Warrior is his spirit!
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

A man who combined spirit and body does not feel the difference between himself and the supreme world or between spiritual and physical.
– Mas Oyama

If a warrior does not possess mighty spirit, he has no core; his strength will come to naught. Weakness generates uncertainty and anxiety. After overcoming the flesh, spiritual and physical force will rise in you. Unshakable self-confidence imparts mental stability.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

As a samurai, I must strengthen my character; as a human being, I must perfect my spirit.
– Yamaoka Tesshū

A warrior must undertake ordeals. Those who think they do not need it, more than likely delude themselves. Your doubts will not be settled until you pass an ordeal. The Way of the Warrior is an ordeal.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Having been born into the house of a warrior, one's intentions should be to grasp the long and the short swords and to die.
– Katō Kiyomasa

Being a man means constantly venturing to produce proof of bravery to yourself. Being a man means always being in the front and following the path to the peak of bravery to die there in the snows of that peak.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

No matter whether a person belongs to the upper or lower ranks, if he has not put his life on the line at least once he has cause for shame.
– Nabeshima Naoshige

The main ordeal is passed when you cease fearing anything at all. The fear is substituted by unflinching determination and calm self-confidence. This is the way a man turns into a samurai.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

A man whose profession is the use of arms should think and then act upon not only his fame, but also that of his descendants. He should not scandalise his name forever by holding his one and only life too dear.
– Shiba Yoshimasa

He is the warrior who practices bravery, having eliminated fear in himself.
The Warrior has broken free from the desire to live and the fear of death.
The Warrior does not want to live, he just lives.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The way of the warrior is death. This means choosing death whenever there is a choice between life and death. It means nothing else.
– Yamamoto Tsunetomo

Fatigue embitters your heart.
Solitude is aristocratic.
Pressure is good.
One should be grateful to hardships.
If a man can endure the press of circumstances and surpass them – he is quite a man!
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

The purpose of coming into the world is to accomplish one's duties.
– Sakamoto Ryōma

Do not build a house on the bridge to be crossed. Come what may, remain calm; there is nothing in the world to be worried about.
You must not be too attached to, or depend upon anything. If there is something too dear to you, it may weaken you: drop it. Everything that may be dropped is excessive.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Following the Way of the Warrior means nothing else than bringing your inner self in accord with the Way and abiding by the Law in the daily life. To bring your mind in accord with the Way means to understand the righteousness and consistency of Bushido and never yield to injustice and evil.
– Daidōji Yūzan

Individualism generates honor. Always remember: a samurai must be a proud man. A proud man needs self-respect, and it can be acquired only through worthy deeds. Pride is not a sin but a virtue. Submission is treachery and the greatest sin against oneself.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Everything that comes from the depths of one's heart creates an ideal one should strive to achieve and even die for if it is necessary.
– Mishima Yukio

If a warrior has not acquired self-awareness, he would not be able even to fight a battle on his own. He must learn to be independent or, better still, a self-sufficient person.
If a person gives importance to the opinions and behavior of others, he is always late in action.
A man must sail his own boat and live by his wits.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Living for him is like
Drifting in the current.
Dying for him is like
Going for a rest…
– Jia Yi

The scrolls of masculine philosophy. It may seem that various acquisitions and an ordinary life might bring satisfaction to a man. This is not completely true.
Just when nothing is lacking and all seems to be square, a man starts to feel dispirited and bored, tormented by some kind of inexplicable, allegedly irrational anguish. It only remains to refer to something lying beyond common sense.
Everyday placidity is not enough for a man. In this condition he feels like a caged tiger. He needs something to transcend the trivial round.
It is this something that makes up the gist of a profound masculine philosophy.
This philosophy is irrational from the standpoint of commonplace sense. For those who have had a taste of it and understood it, it becomes the only natural thing that imparts sense and integrity to life.
Action and achievements are as necessary as air for a man, without them there is only chronic tedium and the loss of interest in life.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Even though I am past seventy now, my vitality is ten times as great as when I was thirty or forty ... I find no difficulty in refraining from sleep for two, three, even seven days, without suffering any decline in my mental powers.
– Hakuin

A man needs the Philosophy of Action and a step into the unknown future, because this Philosophy of all others is his essence.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

It is difficult to call a man who does not understand duty a warrior.
– Daidōji Yūzan

A man is inherently a proud conqueror and inexhaustible adventurer. Power and Action attract him.
If a man lives and breathes them, he is always vigorous and mirthful, because he is in harmony with the essence granted to him by Providence.
As soon a man rejects his essence, he becomes lazy and apathetic, strength abandons him, and he droops and withers like a creature cut from the source that feeds it.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

Since you were born a human being, you must be ashamed to live like a wild beast. Use your strength for the benefit of other people.
– Sōhō Takuan

A Man should always remember: the source of his vital force is the right philosophy.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"

То strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
– Alfred Tennyson

A Man's life is action, the practice of heroism.
A Man should always think of an act of bravery, of a deed, of performing something impossible for all others.
A Man should always remember his heroic mission in life – and he will achieve everything he desires.
A. R. Basov, "Spirit of the Warrior"
