Buddha, two versions: eyes open and eyes closed.

Buddha in the ocean of blood Art

"Little by little, he felt the hunger and thirst subside. The pain that had consumed his body disappeared. Engrossed in prayer, his soul shook off the strict confines of his exhausted body and he became mesmerized by a colossal, terrible visiona gigantic Buddha towering like a mountain above the endless sea of the blood of those who had perished and were born in all of the worlds: everything was born of blood and then turned into blood upon dying. The ocean was limitless and alive; its red depths boiled and seethed as it swelled into more blood and devoured itself. The enormous bloody waves kept challenging the skies as they poured over Buddha, trying to devour him, too. But for some unfathomable reason Buddha, Great and Merciful, was out of bounds. Blood reached his broad shoulders and then his lips which bore the sign of the unsaid Great Mystery. Finally, Buddha was dragged to the depths where he seemed to have vanished, but after a while he reemerged, hands joined in prayer, as imperturbable and enigmatic as ever. Eventually, the crimson waves sank into the abyss, shattering into millions of sparkling bloody rubies while Buddha still sat in deep meditation. His peaceful face, closed eyes and dazzling, lotus-white garments were unstained; not a single drop of blood had tainted Buddha’s mystery and purity.

Not a single one...

He remained absolutely pure. The samurai was coming to the realization that he was no more than a puny drop of blood dripping down Buddha’s forehead when suddenly, Buddha opened his eyes. The samurai recognized them immediately. He had seen them when he was looking at the sky. But the fury in Buddha's eyes had disappeared. They were as tranquil as the ocean after a storm. He had once interpreted this inhuman calm and detachment as fury or menace but now he realized it was something completely different which revealed the mystery behind Buddha’s closed lips. Buddha gazed at him with his piercing, indigo eyes and suddenly exclaimed, “Never give up!”

Then the vision disappeared and gave way to another: it was many years ago at his rites of passage and his father was telling him, “You were dead. Now you are born again. You have had your rites of passage and now you are a Warrior, born twice. Now you are different from others: you know what it means to be born twice. Now you will become unstoppable on your Way. Your body is nothing but a sheath for the blade of your spirit. Spirit materializes in this world to act. Let our Great Faith be your beacon. Be sure to follow the one and only principle: Fight to the last breath! Do what you think needs to be done but make your own decisions and they will lead you to victory! Remember that this law and the Way of the Samurai are the most significant things in life. A samurai’s purpose in life is to manifest his will. Let others bend under the pressure of circumstance like grass that bends in the wind. No circumstance can break YOU! You are a Warrior whose spirit originates from space like the sign of fire. Remember that everything is possible. Believe this religiously and you will derive strength from a sacred inexhaustible source laymen are ignorant of. Remember: he who accepts defeat is already dead. The one who fights until the very end is immortal.”

A. R. Berg, Samurai: Legend
