The artwork portrays the renowned samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo, a celebrated Japanese author best known for his work Hagakure (Hidden by the Leaves). Tsunetomo believed that accepting and reconciling with the idea of death allows a person to transcend ordinary existence and perceive a realm of beauty and perfection that lies beyond the reach of others.
Hagakure explores the philosophy of Bushido and the life of the samurai, outlining the core principles of the warrior class. The book draws on the author’s own experience (Yamamoto Tsunetomo served the Nabeshima clan for 30 years) and includes many stories and quotations from its members. Tsunetomo also reflects on historical events and legends, such as the revenge of the 47 rōnin.
