Miyamoto Musashi: Meditation

The ultimate aim of all martial arts is not having to use them...

Miyamoto Musashi, A Book of Five Rings

Seek nothing outside of yourself.

Miyamoto Musashi, A Book of Five Rings

The most important weapon of a true warrior is his calm spirit and pure, unclouded mind free of attachments and limits. He is immune to wordly passions and fears. Developing this state of consciousness requires many years of rigorous training of body and spirit, the most crucial role in which plays meditation.
In voluntary and focused solitide away from the world's distractions a warrior comprehends the true reality, fostering Harmony and Purity within himself. The warrior becomes impeccable, having developed a steadfast spirit, and can fully put into practice the main princible of all martial arts: "The ultimate aim of all martial arts is not having to use them..." (Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings).
In the painting, the lotus bud near Musashi symbolizes the state of enlightenment.
