Shakuhachi Art

A Buddhist monk playing shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). Music creates new worlds...

In the painting, a monk sits in meditation beneath young bamboo shoots, playing the shakuhachi – a Japanese bamboo flute – whose sound blends with the harmony of nature, illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun.
According to legend, the shakuhachi was born when a disciple, inspired by his teacher’s bell, carved a flute from bamboo whose voice echoed the bell’s pure tone. Zen monks known as komusō used the shakuhachi both for meditation and self-defense. The hotchiku, a root-end version of the flute, produces a deep, breathy sound that imitates the rustle of leaves and the murmur of the sea – a true instrument of meditation.

“When you paint a branch, you must hear the breath of the wind.”
— Zen saying
